Kujō Yoshitsune

Kujo Yoshitsune (Japanese九 条 良 経, * 1169, † April 16, 1206 ), also Fujiwara no Yoshitsune (藤原 良 経) or Gokyōgoku Yoshitsune (后 京 极 良 経) was a Japanese politician, poet and calligrapher.

He was the son of the Grand Chancellor Kujo Kanezane ( Fujiwara no Kanezane ) and a daughter of Fujiwara no Sueyuki. Since his older brother Yoshi Michi (良 通) in 1188 died early, Yoshitsune became the heir -founded by his father Kujo family. So he was named Gon - Gon and Chūnagon - Dainagon the following year. In 1190 he married a daughter of Fujiwara no Yoshiyasus ( Ichijō Yoshiyasu ) and thus became an ally of the Minamoto.

In 1195 he became Chancellor of the Interior ( Naidaijin ), 1199 Chancellor to the left ( Sadaijin ) and then increased in 1204 to the Grand Chancellor ( Daijō daijin ). From 1202 he was also the Regent ( Sesshō ) of the minor Emperor Tsuchimikado. In 1206 he died at the age of 38.

Yoshitsune was also a respected poet and calligrapher.

To his 1204 collection of poems Akishino gessei Shuu (秋 筱月清 集), which contains more than 1600 poems were composed. More than 300 additional poems were published in various imperial collections, such as the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, the Shinchokusen - Wakashū and the Shinkokin - Wakashū. As regards the latter, which contains 79 of his poems, he also wrote the preface in 1205.

On the Yoshitsune Kalligrafiestil Gokyōgoku - ryū (后 京 极 流) goes back, based on the style Hosshōji - ryū (法 性 寺 流).
