History

After the end of the Second World War, more than 80 percent of Neubrandenburg old town lay in ruins. In the years from 1952 to the early 1960s was the rebuilding of the city center. According to the draft of the Berlin architect Iris due to the construction of the cultural center was started in 1963, which was inaugurated in 1965. The total construction cost was 13 million GDR marks.

The reinforced concrete frame structure was built in the form of four different cubature wings around a courtyard. Located on the south side of Market Square with foyer and exhibition hall is fully glazed. The exhibition hall has a floor area of 480 m². The windowless multi-purpose hall with a stage at that time consisted of 600 seats, the number was later reduced to 450. He also serves as a venue for the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic and the Neustrelitzer State Theatre. In the east wing is the regional library Neubrandenburg. In BUA were housed in GDR times, more than 50 working groups and circles for youth and adults.

The southeast built on the Stargarder road 56 meters high tower-like skyscraper with 16 floors was built as a steel construction with curtain walls. The platform allows for views of the area of the city, including the Tollense and the medieval city walls. The tower high-rise - even in the informal term " culture fingers " known - was created as a dominant counterpart to St. Mary's Church, to demonstrate the superiority of the socialist system.

By January 1992, the BUA was subordinate to the culture department of the city, then it was transferred along with the town hall in the city's convention center Neubrandenburg GmbH. The ownership of land and buildings was transferred to the municipal housing company Neubrandenburg that a design competition with the goal of expanding and remodeling through led to a media and administrative center in 2005. Under the proposed changes, the hall and the north wing are removed, a new hall structure to be built over the existing courtyard. The reconstruction works were intended to be completed in 2010. However, the Interior Ministry issued until the end of 2010, after examining the city budget, the approval for the construction project. The conversion, were scheduled for a total cost of 30.2 million euros, began in March 2012 with the renovation of the tower high-rise building and to be completed by April 2014.
