Kunst im Tunnel

Kunst im Tunnel (KIT ) is an underground exhibition space for contemporary art in Dusseldorf. This is a so-called tunnel rest room two meters below the Rhine promenade, which was created during the construction of the Rhine tunnel. The showroom is located in the immediate vicinity of the Diet and the Rheinkniebrücke and was opened on 10 February 2007. Architecture

The newly built entrance pavilion on the Rhine promenade was built to a design by the Düsseldorf architectural firms " Fritschi architects ," the pre-designed in 1995, completed Rhine promenade. The 130 m² building was glazed to the Rhine and includes a small bistro. A staircase and a disabled lift lead down to the 888 m² large underground exhibition area, which lies between the two tunnel tubes for car traffic. The slightly curved tunnel space is 140 meters long - tapered - between eight and one meter wide. Towards the surface two light wells fitted with bulletproof glass have been created.

Exhibitions

KIT is intended for exhibitions of contemporary art and to the Düsseldorf exhibition landscape specifically supplement. It will be shown above all the works of young artists, graduates of the Art Academy Dusseldorf, but also carriers of the Düsseldorf Art Prize. Planned are four exhibitions per year. Back in 2005, has been set up with the Academy Gallery in the premises of the former School of Applied Arts at Castle Square exhibition spaces for professors of the Academy of Arts. Long before the current conversion had first presented elaborate installations under the title LOT 2 in this tunnel rest room 1994, the artist Jost Vishnevsky and Jan Verbeek.
