Kunsthaus Graz

The Kunsthaus Graz was built as part of the Capital of Culture year in 2003 and has since been regarded as a new architectural landmark of the city of Graz. The building, whose exhibition program includes contemporary art from the last five decades, is part of the Universal Museum Joanneum.

Architecture

In its unusual shape, it differs significantly from other exhibition buildings of contemporary art, which are often determined by the idea of ​​the 'white cube'. The building - named by its creators Peter Cook and Colin Fournier " Friendly Alien" - stands out in the shape and material with its biomorphic, round shapes aware of the baroque roof landscape with its red-tiled roofs from, but closes on the facade of the 1847 -built Iron house on. Concept

The Kunsthaus Graz has been developed as an institution for the organization of international exhibitions multi-disciplinary modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. It does not accumulate, sets up no permanent exhibitions, has no permanent depots or research institutions. It is solely the presentation and mediation of contemporary artistic production.

" BIX " media facade

In some areas of the facade of the Kunsthaus light elements are integrated, making the outer skin of the building used as a communication medium. The planning and implementation was done in collaboration with the artists / architects of the group realities: united. " BIX " - the name of the facade is made up of the words " Big" and "pixels" together - evades the acrylic glass skin of the east side of the building toward Mur and downtown. This giant screen is used, sometimes accompanying exhibition, as an additional medium for art projects, in particular for interacting with the public space. Technically, the BIX media façade of 930 standard circular 40 -watt fluorescent tubes spread over 900 m². The lights are individually controlled and continuously as a whole constitute an oversized screen. The coarse resolution in conjunction with the poor visibility through the curved surfaces, however, limits its use as an information medium strong.

For the year of the tenth anniversary of the Kunsthaus Ingo J. Biermann, Fiene Scharp and Kai Miedendorp shot a semi-documentary short film in and about the building. The film Astronaut's Ark was for the exhibition culture: designed city, which took place from March to June 2013, the Academy of Arts (Berlin) from July to October 2013 at the Kunsthaus Graz. In October 2013, the film from which a five-minute exhibition version and a ten-minute theatrical version, there was then also shown at the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam.
