Kunstmuseum Stuttgart

The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart was opened in March 2005 as the "Successor museum " of the Gallery of the City of Stuttgart. In the first year after the opening of the house 330,000 visitors were counted. Thus, the art museum has even surpassed the State Gallery in Stuttgart. Its prominent location in the pedestrianized King Street also contributes to this, as the extraordinary architecture of the exhibition space enveloping strict glass cube.

The previous director of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Marion Ackermann, 2009 was director of the Art Collection NRW in Dusseldorf. Ulrike Groos, former Director of the Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, took over the management of the Art Museum, 2010.

Architecture

The museum building with 5,000 m² of exhibition space was designed by the Berlin architect sensationalist and Jehle. It looks from the outside during the day as a glass cube that houses the environment as a mirror. At night, the illuminated limestone walls of limestone Dietfurter inside are visible. The originating from the Altmühltal Natural stones are irregular crustal plates with colored mineral oxidation. Another special " eye-catcher " are meter-high words and texts of gray and red adhesive sheet which are attached to the outside of the glass windows and change with each exhibition. The flooring on the top floor is limestone Auer also known as Kelheimer limestone from the Altmühltal.

Architectural History

At the point of the cube of the new art museum was until 1963 the ruins of the 1944 damaged in an air raid Kronprinzenpalais. It was the urban equivalent of the Wilhelm Palace, which is located at the other end of the grading. After the demolition of the ruins of the grading was first expanded into a six-lane road with four additional tunnels for cars and trams.

To facilitate the crossing for pedestrians on the King's Road, 1968, the step-like scale Small Palace Square was built, but was not well received in its function. For years, discussed an outline of the structure deemed superfluous, since the aboveground cross street was überdeckelt again. The new building of the Art Museum closed after 2000, the vacant lot next to the Königsbau along the King's Road.

Collection

The museum's collection is based on the existence of the previous " Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart ". This goes back to a donation by the Marquis Silvio della Valle di Casanova in 1924.

Today belongs to the inventory, the most important collection of works by the artist Otto Dix. For them, specially one floor has been reserved. The museum also has numerous works of Willi Baumeister, Adolf Hölzel, Dieter Roth, Dieter Krieg, Rebecca Horn and many other well known artists.

The studio and home of Otto Dix on the Hori on Lake Constance was taken over by the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, 2009. The city of Stuttgart, the community Gaienhofen, the district of Konstanz and sponsors invested a total of 1.5 million euros to rescue the great need of repair house.
