Kusumoto Ine

Kusumoto Ine (Japanese楠本 イネ, even with the then customary for women Honorativpräfix O Inc; born May 31, 1827 in Dejima, Nagasaki, † August 26 1903 in Mamiana, Azabu ) was the first Japanese woman doctor and midwife on the Western model. Her father was the German physician and naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold and her mother Kusumoto Taki (楠 本 泷; 1807-1865 ), also Sonogi (其 扇) called. Her father worked as a physician in the Dutch trading post Dejima, until he was expelled as a result of " Siebold affair" of the year 1828/29 the country. Only in 1859 could Siebold again to enter Japan and see his daughter again.

They also used the name失 本 稲, with失 本can be read as Shibon and thus a reference to their father's name, while稲a Chinese character ( kanji ) with the pronunciation Ine is, instead of the more unusual names for katakana letters イネ.

At the age of 14 years Ine began training in medicine in a living in Uwa former student of her father. After she had successfully practiced as a doctor for birth and gynecology in Nagasaki for many years, she was appointed physician to the empress body.

Her life was processed by a Japanese artist to the musical Ine. It was on the occasion of the 1,300 th anniversary of Würzburg in 2004 its European premiere.
