The Kyoto Station (京都 駅Japanese, Kyōto- eki ) is a major railway station in the Japanese city of Kyoto.

The closest

The new central station of Kyoto is one of the largest train stations in Japan. From here, go all types of trains in different directions, such as the Shinkansen high-speed trains to Osaka and Tokyo, as well as commuter trains and Japanese private railways in the direction of Osaka and Kobe.

The building

The building is one of the most modern in the city of futuristic avant-garde character. It was designed by Hiroshi Hara and completed in 1997. Its architecture made it to a building in Japan controversial. Many conservatives see him as a design eyesore for Kyoto, which would disturb the established structure of the city sensitive.

In technical terms, the railway station, however, is up to date: So the tracks are arranged approximately in part one above the other. The Shinkansen platforms are to be found in the second level, the subways below ground. Thus, the reduced shear track, which is an important advantage meant for though the architecture and cityscape of Kyoto are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the station was badly in need of expansion. The purpose of tourist revenue now comes the train station by intelligent control systems meet (monitor panels in kanji and romaji, many international symbol displays, color strips on the floor, etc.). Now it is also possible for non-Japanese to orient themselves in a short time and in the rush hour scrum.

Since one is allowed to enter the platforms by ticket only in Japan, a separate small portion is reserved for the Shinkansen trains. In several levels to the traveler is the target group oriented food, literature, souvenirs, clothes and electronics offered, while the fast-food shops and newspaper stands dominate the commuter railroads.

The Kyoto station covers a total area of 237 689 square meters, is approximately 470 meters long and up to fifteen stories high. The building consists of three parts, is in the middle of the great hall, which is covered by an impressive glass structure in the eastern part of the building, the Hotel Granvia Kyoto, while, a shopping center located in the western part of the building of the Isetan Department Store.

In the upper floors of the east wing, in the basement under the station square and on the south side below the Shinkansen platforms are so-called food zones. There are several small restaurants and other food stalls.

The architecture

The internal architecture of the station is optimized for Kyoto's hot summer climate and the rainy season in the winter to go: The great hall is located between two large wedge-shaped structures. They represent mountains, the hall itself is like a pond. The area that is underwater, was dressed in black - bluish granite upwards ( after a sharp dividing line ) is always close to lighter stones at. The glass geodesic hall roof structure mimics the roof of a bamboo forest, the heavy columns look like the roof of temple halls, which in turn imitate pine proportions. A small lounge and a kiosk echoes the forms of lotus fruits that protrude from the water.

The wedge- shaped building are covered with a large flight of stairs, escalators of polished stainless steel reflect light and form in the midday sun the aspect of a waterfall, which flows from the hills into the pond.

Position in Kyoto

The tourist information office is located since 2004 no longer in the building of Kyoto Tower, as listed on most maps, but on the 1st floor of the station building, just opposite the transition to the train tracks in the eastern part of the building.

Near the station are the temple of the temple Tō -ji, a larger monastery with very interesting gardens in zen - buddhist -influenced architectural styles. Similarly, one finds a youth hotel of the same name.
