Kyzylorda

Kyzylorda ( Kazakh Қызылорда; Russian Кызылорда, Kysylorda; 1925-1991 officially Кзыл - Орда, Kzyl -Orda, and Kyzyl -Orda ) is a city in Kazakhstan and the capital of Kyzylorda region. The population of the city of Kyzylorda is 157,400 (as of 1999).

History

Kyzylorda was a fortress of the Khanate of Kokand under the name Ak - Metschet ( Kazakh for " white minaret " ) founded in 1820. After the conquest by Russian troops under Adjutant General Vasily Perovsky 1853, the fort was named Fort Perovsky. 1867 was the place under the name Perowsk administrative center of a circle ( Ujesd ) of the Syr Darya Oblast of the Russian Empire. 1920 to 1925 the town was again the old name Ak - Metschet, then in Kyzylorda ( Kazakh for " red army ( camp ) " ) to be renamed. 1925-1929 it was the capital of the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ( which later became the Kazakh SSR, the predecessor of the present-day Kazakhstan, was born).
