L' Année philologique (short APh ), also Marouzeau ( after its founder, the Latinist Jules Marouzeau ), is the most important and comprehensive bibliography in the field of classical antiquity science.

History of the work

The Année philologique was launched in 1924 and appeared in 1928 in a first band, the 1924 involved the years up to 1926. In the bibliography independent and dependent securities are recorded, treat AD 800 the history and culture of the Mediterranean region from prehistoric times ( 2nd millennium BC) until about the year. The central theme of the Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.

After Marouzeaus death in 1964, his long -time collaborator Juliette Ernst was editor. She founded in 1965 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have a branch for evaluation, 1972, a second in Heidelberg. 1977, a third office in Lausanne was opened, followed by others in 1996 and 1999 in Genoa Granada. Structure and Content

The structure of the Année philologique is split. The first part consists of the topics covered ancient authors and texts, the second part of subjects and disciplines. The volumes are accessible through thematic indices for ancient names, modern names and authors. Since Volume 42 (1971 ), a geographical index is on offer, the short-term (Volumes 57 and 58, 1986 and 1987 ) was abandoned.

Currently, about 12,500 new entries are recorded annually. For this purpose, 1,500 periodicals and anthologies (such as meeting reports, symposia volumes, Commemorative ) are evaluated. Too many articles a Abstract is offered. To Monographs review information is given. The Marouzeau evaluates small and little used magazines and is thus an important tool for opening up of antique scientific literature. After 1995, a database on CD- ROM with the contents of the cohorts was published from 1976 to 1987 ( Database of Classical Bibliography ), there is the possibility of fee-based access to the database over the Internet since the late 1990s. Currently, the dataset from 1949 to 2006 is available, consisting of 600,000 entries.

Important and now almost universally recognized in the research is that of APh prefixed abbreviations of the journals. The problem with the Marouzeau is now several years amount end report delay due to the large amount of antique scientific publications, which continues to grow, it create the publisher no longer maintain the earlier usually two years draw period extending between the appearance of the volumes and their periods. Therefore, it has become naturalized in the research, this period appears quarterly with the to bridge very current bibliographic information in the journal gnomon. However, the gnomon does not evaluate journals in comparable large quantity and are also no further information.
