L' Estaque is a former fishing village, located on the Rade de Marseille, which was incorporated in 1946 as part of the 16th arrondissement to Marseille. West of L' Estaque begins the Côte Bleue. The hill Chaîne de l' Estaque gave the place its name.

The artists' village

The place was visited by Georges Braque, Paul Cézanne, Raoul Dufy and many other visual artists and has inspired the artists. Braque's paintings from 1908, houses in L' Estaque, first evoked the concept of cubism.

A little of this former artist's or whose past is still evident today: the inhabitants are distinguished from the other Marseillais and make no bones about it, not to feel for about 30 minutes by bus from the city belongs. ( Line 35 - St. from the small church Église Ferréol at the Old Port Vieux Port from the Rue de la République up or down to the apex and then La Joliette, passing the new port, from where the big ferries to Corsica and Africa drive ).

In the 1990s, Robert Guédiguian L' Estaque has put his film Marius and Jeannette / Marius et Jeannette in the public eye. Guédiguian is local ( Marseillais ), with Armenian father and German mother. His film shows according to the French film dialogue joyfully entertaining and at a high level today's everyday life of the so-called little people of L' Estaque, located in the microcosm of this environment for L' Estaque typical nested small house.
