La Garnache

La Garnacha is a commune with 4557 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vendée in the Pays de la Loire; it belongs to the district of Les Sables d'Olonne and the canton of Challans.

La Garnacha is breton in the northwest of the Vendée, between the Marais and the Atlantic coast, about 40 km from La Roche- sur -Yon, 60 km from Nantes, Saint -Jean -de- Monts, and 35 km from Noirmoutier.

History

The dynasty of the Lords of La Garnacha first appeared around 1045 as vassals of the viscount of Thouars; their possessions extended to La Garnacha, Beauvoir- sur -Mer, Bois -de- Céné, the Ile d' Yeu, the Ile de Noirmoutier, Sallertaine etc. Six Gentlemen of La Garnacha built to 1214 on its mighty castle before the country succession fell to the Lords of Belleville, the house Clisson and the house of Rohan Soubise. King Louis XIII. finally ordered the demolition of the fortress.
