La Neuve-Lyre

La Neuve -Lyre is a commune with 593 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Eure in the Haute-Normandie region. It belongs to the district Évreux, for Canton Rugles and the Local Government Association.

Geography

La Neuve -Lyre is located in the southwest of the department of Eure in the Pays d' Ouche at the Risle, 32 kilometers southwest of Évreux, just 1.1 kilometers south of La Vielle -Lyre. To the east of the village lies the great Forêt de Conches. The hamlet Chagny belongs to the municipality.

History

Initially, La Neuve -Lyre was a part of the village of La Vieille -Lyre. 1046 founded FitzOsbern William, 1st Earl of Hereford ( 1020-1071 ), a Benedictine abbey in La Vieille -Lyre. In the Memorandum, the village, the church and the mills of Nova Lire ( La Neuve -Lyre ) is mentioned. Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Leicester ( 1050-1118 ) had a castle in Nova Lira. 1119 was Eustache de Breteuil († 1136 ), the son of King Henry I of England, the castle expand. The castle was taken in 1419 by English troops.

1793 was La Neuve -Lyre in the wake of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) the status of a municipality and was the capital of a canton. 1801 was the church as La Neuve- lire the right to local self-government and was assigned to the Canton Rugles.

Most inhabitants of La Neuve -Lyre had 1800 (817) and least 1999 (567) a year.

Coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms is red and divided into four places ( crossing ). The first and fourth place showing a silver lance tip, the second and third place a silver five-blade. In the center is a blue heraldic shield, on which a Lyra is shown. The metallic color " gold" and "silver" are shown in yellow and white on the coat of arms.

Attractions

The estate Domaine de la Chapelle is southwest of the town center and is partly located on the grounds of the community Neaufles - Auvergny. In the 19th century the estate was purchased by a wholesale hardware dealer from Ambenay. This property is surrounded castle, the Château de la Chapelle, a park and several pavilions. The park was established in 1865, the present castle 1876-1879 using parts of the old castle by the architect Jacques Baumier ( 1824-1886 ) built. The entire Domaine de la Chapelle was entered in the Register of Monuments historiques additional (historical monuments ) 2002.

The nave and bell tower of the church of Saint -Gilles date from the 12th, the choir from the 13th century. The bell tower consists of Grison a reddish iron oxides by stone.

Economy

In the 19th century there were in La Neuve -Lyre a rolling mill, a wire-drawing of brass wire and a tannery. From 1866 to the first half of the 20th century, the Lyre station of trains of the railway line was Conches - L' Aigle approached.

Today there is a cheese factory in the Camembert of protected designation of origin (AOC ) Camembert de Normandie is made. In addition to the protected designation of origin for Camembert apply in the municipality protected geographical indication ( PGI ) for Pork ( Porc de Normandie), poultry ( Volailles de Normandie) and cider ( Cidre de Normandie and cider normand ).
