La Pared de los Moros

BW

La Pared de los Moros ( German: The wall of the Moors ) was a Roman gravity dam in the province of Teruel in Aragon (Spain ) from the 3rd century AD

The dam has a length of 68 meters and dammed the Farlan, a tributary of the Río Aguasvivas. The up to 8.40 m high gravity dam had a base width of 2.7 m. She is an extremely slim wall for their design. This led to the assumption that the dam may have been reinforced with the earth. This assumption could not be confirmed archaeologically. The wall consists of two outer layers of lime mortar (opus incaertum ) and a 70 cm thick core of Roman concrete (opus caementitium ). The so jammed water was used for irrigation. The dam is preserved in ruins, in the center, the river has cut below the base and thereby swept away the middle part of the wall.
