La Piedad is with only 83 323 inhabitants ( census 2010) is the seventh largest city in the Mexican state of Michoacán.

The city was founded by the Aztecs in 1530 and conquered by the Spanish invaders who first gave it the name of San Sebastián Aramutarillo. When the settlement was granted city status in 1871, it got its present name: La Piedad de Cabadas. " La Piedad " means " Piety " and the addition was awarded in honor of the priest José Cabadas Corzo. Also built in the years 1832-33 Cabadas Bridge, which connects the states of Michoacán and Guanajuato over the River Lerma each other, is dedicated to this priest. La Piedad is located about 500 km west- north-west of Mexico City and about 190 km north- west of Morelia, capital of Michoacán.

The main products of the municipality are corn and other agricultural products and livestock. One of the local specialties are pork knuckles with vinaigrette.
