La Roë

La Roë is a commune of 248 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Mayenne in the Pays de la Loire. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes de Saint- Aignan- Renazé.

Geography

La Roë is located on the western edge of the Pays de la Loire, 11.2 km south east of La Guerche- de -Bretagne and 13.9 kilometers northwest of Craon.

History

The Abbey of La Roë was founded by Robert of Arbrissel (1045-1116) in 1096, although he had already in 1098 resumed his life as a traveling preacher, the monastery flourished. In the Huguenot wars (1562-1598), the abbey was devastated. In the 18th century it was partially rebuilt in 1796, however, destroyed again in the wake of the French Revolution.

Culture and sights

The abbey is now part of the municipality and is partly privately owned, it is partly as a monument historique (historic monument) classified. Has been preserved, among other things, the Romanesque abbey church. In the church there are bell sent a Latin inscription of 1745 and a prie-dieu in the first half of the 17th century, which are also classified as MH.

Economy

The main economic activities in La Roë are agriculture and breeding of domestic cattle, hogs and poultry.
