La Romana is about 190 000 inhabitants (2008), the fourth largest city in the Dominican Republic and one of the largest cities in the Caribbean. The city is the capital of the province of La Romana, located on the southern coast, opposite the island of Catalina. La Romana is set on a small hillside and there is a large part of industry, including with a sugar refinery.

Near the town is the private settlement of Casa de Campo, where many celebrities own a villa. At this settlement also includes the artists' village of Altos de Chavon, where Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley got married.
