Labé

Region

Labé is a city in Guinea. It is the regional capital and prefecture Labé and geographical center of the Fouta Djallon region.

The inhabitants are predominantly LABES Fulbe, lingua franca is in addition to the official French the Fulfulde. Crafts ( weaving, shoemaking ), trade and agriculture ( honey) dominate the economic life of the city and its surroundings. Labé regarded as Islamic stronghold Guinea.

History

The city was founded around 1755 by Karamoko Alpha, a religious leader who spread Islam in the Fouta Djallon in the 18th century. 1898 the province Labé into an independent kingdom in the Fouta Djallon ( Fulbe theocracy ). Labé established next to Timbo as the second capital of the Fouta; 1901 completed the division into two regions. With the deportation of the last king of Labé, Alpha Yaya in 1905 by the Dahomey Fulbe theocracy comes to an end. Under the French mandate of the Fouta Djallon is reorganized administratively; Labé is under the Governor -General Ponty 1912, the county town.

1996, the population was 49 479, according to a census in 2005 estimated to rise to 110,000.
