Labros Papakostas

Lambros Papakostas (Greek Λάμπρος Παπακώστας, born 20 October 1969 in Karditsa ) is a retired Greek high jumper.

Career

Papakostas was 1988-2000 eight Greek champion in the high jump. Internationally, he first appeared at the World Junior Athletics Championships 1986 in Athens in appearance and there occupied the eighth place. Two years later he won at the IAAF World Junior Championships in 1988 in Greater Sudbury behind eventual Europe and Vice World Champion Artur Partyka of Poland, the silver medal.

After several Final placings, including an eighth place finish at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1994, Papakostas succeeded at the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships in Barcelona in 1995 his first international medal win in the adult area. With a personal Hallenbestleistung of 2.35 m, he finished second and had to admit defeat to the Olympic champion and world record holder Javier Sotomayor from Cuba, the jumped over 2.38 m.

At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta Papakostas finished sixth. The following year he won at the World Indoor Championships in Paris after the U.S. Olympic gold medalist Charles Austin another silver medal. Outdoors he finished sixth at the World Championships in Athens. After that he remained for some years active, but could not achieve great results more international.

Lambros Papakostas is 1,92 m tall and weighed about his playing days 75 kg. He first started out for Gymnastikos Syllogos Karditsa and later for Aris Thessaloniki. His personal record in high jump is 2.36 meters, set on 21 June 1992, Athens.
