Lachenalia

Lachenalia moniliformis

Lachenalia is a plant genus of the subfamily Scilloideae the Asparagaceae family. The botanical name of the genus honors Werner de Lachenal (1736-1800), a Swiss professor of botany in Basel.

Description

It is onion plants which grow individually or in groups. The variable, sometimes spotted or marked with transverse bands leaves are upright or horizontal spread.

The paniculate inflorescences are ascending and have wide membrane-like flower-bearing bracts. The perianth is positioned erect or nodding. The six, mostly color, tepals are fused at the base and spread out or form a tube. The inner tepals are sometimes longer than the outer. The six stamens are free. The stamens are terete and do not protrude or even. The ovary is ovoid.

The egg-shaped form fruit lokulizide capsules in which the black and spherical seeds are included.

Distribution and systematics

The species of the genus Lachenalia are common in the winter rainfall areas of South Africa. The main distribution areas are the South African part of the Succulent Karoo, the Renosterveld and Fynbos.

The first description of the genus by Johan Andreas Murray was published in 1784. He referred to the selected by Joseph Franz von Jacquin genus name. Type species of the genus is Lachenalia tricolor J.Jacq .. The genus includes the following Lachenalia, about 130 species:
