Lacrimal caruncle

The Tränenkarunkel or Tränenwärzchen ( lacrimal caruncle ) is a nodule- like structure in the nose-lateral canthus. It is a slightly modified form of the conjunctiva and is formed by a push through adipose tissue. The mucosa has sebaceous glands, goblet cells and serous glands also some hoses.

In many mammals, the Tränenkarunkel is pigmented, slightly hairy in some (even in humans).

In the dog, an accessory lacrimal gland, the parotid carunculae lacrimal is incorporated into the Tränenkarunkel. In the other mammals it has nothing to do with the lacrimal apparatus, the name is thus rather misleading.
