Lacus Juturnae

The Juturna source (Latin lacus Iuturnae ) arose at the foot of the Palatine and lay on the Roman Forum in Rome. It is named after the Latin nymph Juturna. The water had been worshiped as beneficial. In the year 117 BC, about a pool was built and provided with statues on the Campus Martius. According to legend, Castor and Pollux watered their horses at the source, as they BC brought the news of the victory over the Etruscans 496 to Rome. The source formed a unit with the Dioscuri Temple ( Aedes Castoris ). On January 11, an ancient Roman festival was celebrated annually in honor of the nymph, which they described as Juturnalien.
