Ladislav Haškovec

Ladislav Haskovec ( born May 18, 1866 in Bechyně, Bohemia, † January 16, 1944 in Prague) was a Bohemian neuropsychiatrist, who first described the symptoms of akathisia in 1901.

Life

Ladislav Haskovec studied at Prague's Charles University Medical Center, where he worked from 1892 in psychiatry. In 1916 he was appointed professor. From 1925 until his retirement in 1936, he was Director of the Clinic for Nervous Diseases at the University of Prague. Ladislav Haskovec was married and had three children.

Performance

His most outstanding achievement is the discovery of akathisia. Before the Societé de Neurologie in Paris, he reported on 7 November 1901, two such cases, which were subsequently published in the Revue Neurologique. The disease, which today usually occurs as a side effect of neuroleptics, he has thus discovered decades before the introduction of such drugs.
