The Ordinary Eimuschel ( Laevicardium laevigatum ) is a species of bivalve mollusc of the family of cockles ( Cardiidae ), which belongs to the order Veneroida.

Features

The casing having a maximum diameter of up to 5 cm. The outer shape is clearly ovate oval ( hence the name) and higher than long. The shell is compared to other cockle species relatively thin. It has no radialstrahligen wrinkles like most other representatives of Cardiidae family. The surface shows growth lines, which are crossed by up to 60 very fine, radial strips. The periostracum is brownish to yellowish, sometimes also white; the surface shines. The inside of the flap is colored partly yellowish.

Life, the occurrence and distribution

The Ordinary Eimuschel lives in shallow water, shallow buried in the sandy- silty sediment. It comes from the southeastern states of the U.S., on the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean to Brazil before. It is pronounced in their area of ​​distribution in many places often.

Reproduction
