Two tributaries feeding the lake: the torrent Risla and the torrent of S. Maria Flavona.

The lake was known by a unique phenomenon in a biological sense: Until the mid- 1960s took the lake during the warmer summer months, a dark red coloring, which is why he was also called the "Red Sea". This coloration was caused by the mass occurrence of micro-algae from the group of dinoflagellates, the 20/1000 mm Glenodinium sanguineum. In the years 2009 and 2010, this phenomenon also occurred at Seealpsee on in Appenzell.

Probably pollution led to the fact that the appearance of not more occurred since 1964. The construction of a sewage treatment plant and the reduction of lakeside parking is trying to give him to return this particular feature again.
