Laguna Colorada

The Laguna Colorada is a shallow ( average 0.5 m and 1.5 m deep at the deepest point ), 60 km ² large lake in the Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Abaroa, the National Park wildlife of the Andes " Eduardo Avaroa ", in the southern part of the Altiplano in the Bolivian department of Potosí at an altitude of 4278 meters above the sea.

The lake got its name due to its striking red color, which is caused by the dominant algal species and the high mineral content of its water.

The lake is known for its large populations of flamingos of the three types Chilean Flamingo, Yellow-footed or Andean flamingo and James or short beak flamingo.

The Laguna Colorada is very remote and thus accessible only by jeep tours from Uyuni and San Pedro de Atacama.
