Laguna Verde (Bolivia)

The Laguna Verde ( " Green Lagoon " ) is a lake in National Park Andina Eduardo Abaro in southwest Bolivia. It lies at the foot of the volcano Licancabur to 4,329 m.

Mineral content and color

The distinct coloration is caused by a high content of minerals like magnesium, calcium, lead, and arsenic. Depending on wind strength and the resulting stirred up sediments changes color between light turquoise and dark green. The special mineral content is also made responsible for ensuring that there is no Flamingos in the Laguna Verde. Flamingos will stay in the directly adjacent Laguna Blanca, which, however, has a different mineral content.
