Laguna de Gallocanta

The Laguna de Gallocanta ( Aragonese: Lacuna de Gallocanta ) is one of Spain's biggest lakes in the Autonomous Region of Aragon and one of the largest wintering areas of European gray crane. The lake is characterized precipitation dependent by a fluctuating water level. Situated at 995 meters above sea level, it reaches to 7.7 km long, 2.8 km wide and 1.5 m deep, with an area of ​​over 14 sq km The endorheic sink is located on the border with the province of Zaragoza, near the province of Guadalajara between the sierras of Santa Cruz and Pardo in the north, the Sierra Menera in the south and the Sierra del Caldereros in the east. The latching cranes arrived in winter 2008/2009 a maximum number of 35,790. The lagoon is subject to the Ramsar Convention since 1995 and is also a national nature reserve. The birds find food to surrounding corn and sunflower fields.

The Laguna de Gallocanta belongs mostly to the communities Gallocanta (northwest) and Berrueco (northeast), and with a small proportion also Las Cuerlas (southwest) of the Campo de Daroca, a comarca of the province of Zaragoza. The south-eastern part, however, belongs to the municipality of Bello, Comarca del Jiloca, Teruel province.
