Lake Alakol

The Alaköl Lake ( Kazakh Алакөл ) is a saltwater lake in Kazakhstan. It lies on the border between the provinces Almaty and East Kazakhstan, about 60 km west of the border with China. He is the northwestern extension of the known as Djungarian gate valley. This narrow valley connects the southern highlands of Kazakhstan with the dry Northwest China. It is a fault that leads to the valley floor between 350-450 m above sea level, the summit of the Djungarian Alatau (pictured below right), however, reach a height of 4,463 m. Two clearly distinct alluvial fans were deposited by mountain rivers on the southwest side of the lake.

The Alaköl has a catchment area of ​​65,200 km ² and is temporarily fed the north by Urdschar which also forms its outflow at the south end. The lake lies at an altitude of 347 m ³ has an area of 2,650 km ², a depth of 54 m and a volume of 58.6 km. A wetland connecting the lake to the south Sassykköl Lake.

The State Reserve Alaköl was created because the lake is an important breeding area for birds. One of them in particular is one of the Reliktmöwe ( Ichthyaetus relictus ). On the Piski Island there are flamingos and 40 other species of birds. The largest island is Ul'kun -Aral -Tyube in the middle of the lake.

Agriculture in the region is limited to areas with sufficient moisture, especially along temporary water streams and leading in the deltas and alluvial fans of rivers.

The Bronze Age Andronovo culture settled in the wider area of the lake. Middle of the 1st century of our era was the Alaköl at the eastern end of the state Kangar which appears on Chinese maps of the western territories.
