Lake Amaramba

BW

The Amaramba Lake is a relatively shallow lake in Mozambique near the border with Malawi. It is loaded and drained by Chiuta lake in the north of the river Lugenda through a narrow inlet in the south of the lake. The Lugenda continues to flow in the Rovuma, which ultimately leads to the Indian Ocean.

Geography

Due to its small depth of the lake is only partially open water ( 4350 ha), the remainder consisting of marshy areas ( 4000 ha). The swampy areas are located on the southern and south-eastern end of the elongated lake. To the east of Amaramba there are isolated hills ( Mitumbi, Mero, Mangombo, Chikalulu and Lipembegwe ).

During the rainy season, connect the Chiuta Lake and the Amaramba lake and form a common body of water. Here, the 9 km long tributary between these two lakes disappears under the water masses.

Use

The lake serves the few residents above all as a source of drinking water. Due to its wealth of fish is also intensively fished on the Amaramba and partly also illegal. Furthermore, the lake serves as a major transport route.
