Longest lake in Lithuania, wooden bridge across the lake
The lake Asveja ( Lithuanian Asveja or Dubingių Ežeras ) located in the east of Lithuania and extends over the Rajongemeinden Molėtai Švenčioniai and Vilnius. The length from north-west to south-eastern shore is 21.9 km, taking into account all branches ( bulges Žalktynė, Vyriogala and Dubingiai ) results in a length of 29.7 km. He is the longest lake in Lithuania, with a maximum depth of 50.2 meters, it is the third deepest in the country.
The alternate name comes from the historical castle Dubingiai, which on a former island (now peninsula ) was built in the lake at the small town located on the northeastern shore Dubingiai. The Asvejasee is its creation by a Glazialsee and is similar to comparable lakes in Lithuania ( Tauragnas, Sartai and Aisetas ) a river, it is long, narrow and deep.
Since 1992, the lake is the heart of the regional park Asveja, which is to protect an area of 11 589 hectares of the glacial landscape with about 30 lakes, several villages, the castle above and a historic school house to the place Dubingiai around. South of the Natural Park of the right Neriszufluss Zeimena flows in a southwesterly direction, through which one can reach the Neris river by canoe or kayak.
A special feature is the wooden bridge that crosses with a length of 84 m, a 15 m deep Seeabschnitt. It was inaugurated in 1934 by the then first President of the Republic Antanas Smetona and is still used today.
