Geography

This then bifurcates ( the Upper and Lower Valley ) by the striking mountain vagina of Savnica (863 m) and Rudnica ( 946 m) can be separated into two parallel valleys, Zgornja and Spodnja Valley. In the lower part there is the small basin of Nomenj. The entire valley is about 20 km long and more than 5 km wide.

Earth's

This valley has already been formed in the Oligocene, as a bay from the east reached this far. During glaciations, large amounts of ice slid down from the surrounding mountains, the zuschütteten the basin with moraines. The basin of Lake Bohinj formed the front trough of the Bohinj glacier; the moraine is still visible, particularly in the settlement Stara Fužina. The glacial deposits accumulated on the water on the east side, forming in this way the lake. The summit was once larger and higher, which occupy the higher terraces on the east and the south.

Limnology

The most important permanent surface inflow is the Savica which arises partly as a waterfall below the Komarča - wall in the upper part of the lake basin. The Savica superimposed debris from the lake, which forms an ever expanding Delta. The lake water is renewed three times a year. Here live 65 species of algae, eight species of molluscs and five species of fish ( lake trout, burbot, whitefish, lake trout and minnow ). During heavy rainfall periods, the level of the lake increased by 2 to 3 m. On the rugged slopes then occur on torrents with waterfalls that can be deposited gravel and debris in the lake, but go back a few hours after the rain and wane. In this way, massive landfills have emerged, such Naklova glava east of the settlement Ukanc and Na jami below the waterfall Govic. In winter the lake freezes almost regularly.
