Lake Dunstan

Reservoir

The Lake Dunstan is an artificial lake in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. It was created in the 1990s by the construction of the Clyde Dam on the Clutha River. For parts of the city Cromwell were relocated to a new area above the new lake.

The Lake Dunstan provides water for irrigation of the surrounding orchards and vineyards. In addition, it is used for water sports such as boating, water skiing, fishing, paragliding and rowing.

Dam and lake were known in New Zealand because of the media interest in the geological problems during construction. During the construction period, there was at least a major landslide, future explorations found in the Cromwell Gorge six large, older landslides, but for the most part were no longer active. It was feared this might block the gorge or lead to waves .. Because of the additional costs which took place from October 1988 to March 1994 under the direction of Opus International Consultants stabilization of the canyon walls and a changing economic climate, this was the last of the Think Big projects of Prime Minister Robert Muldoon.

The State Highway 8 runs along the east coast of the lake, the State Highway 6 on the west coast. They are connected in Chromwell from State Highway 8. Besides situated at the south end of the lake city Chromwell are the villages Lowburn and Pisa Moorings on the west bank and Cripple Town on the eastern shore.
