Lake Ginninderra
Lake Ginninderra is a lake in the Australian capital Canberra. It was created in 1974 to collect ² in a catchment area of 98 km excess rainfall during storms and to preserve the Molonglo River from flooding. Around the lake there are many neighborhoods in the boroughs Belconnen and Gungahlin. The lake is a habitat for many water birds, such as mourning swans, moorhens and ducks.
The 1.05 km ² and up to 3.5 m deep lake was created by the construction of the dam the road Ginninderra Drive, which leads across the creek Ginninderra Creek. In 2004 the dam was raised by 1 m in order to be prepared for a flood that can theoretically occur once every 1 million years. The point of this construction project is controversial because of Ginninderra Drive is almost 8 m above the lake level and even during the most violent storms in the formation of the Lake, this never increased by more than 30 cm.
