Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara (English Lake Manyara, French Lac Manyara, Lake Manyara Italian ) is a freshwater lake in the north of Tanzania, located about 120 kilometers west of Arusha.

The name comes from a word in the Maasai language emanyara, and translates spurge.

The lake is about 230 km ². Around the Lake Manyara live some animal species. The most frequently encountered are elephants, hippos, giraffes, baboons and buffalo.

The lake is surrounded by varied landscapes, the savanna in the east, dry forest in the southwest and tropical forest in the northwest.

Lake Manyara is located in the eastern part of Lake Manyara National Park, the lake covers 220 km ² of the area of the national park, and is also protected by the administration of the National Park. Since 1981 the lake has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Guided tours are conducted, where you can visit over 300 bird species.
