Lake Matagami

The Lac Matagami is a 236 km ² large lake in Canada, in the Regional County Municipality Jamesie (administrative region of Nord- du- Québec) in Québec.

Geography

The lake is located in a marsh rich region in the north of Quebec City. It is fed by several rivers, including Allard, Bell, Gouault and Waswanipi. The lake reaches a width of 14 km and a length of 43 km.

History

The Lac Matagami has long been used between the 18th and the 20th century by the Hudson 's Bay Company as a transport route for the fur trade.

Origin of the name

In the language of the Cree Matagami means " meeting of the waters" means a reference to the larger rivers that flow into the lake.
