Lake McKerrow

BW

The Lake McKerrow ( Māori: Whakatipu Waitai ) is a lake in the north of Fiordland in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand. The lake extends about 15 km from the southeast to the northwest and has an area of 28 km ².

The Lake McKerrow is fed and drained by the Hollyford River. He is, together with the Lake Alabaster one of two lakes in the lower reaches of the Hollyford River. The Hollyford Track, one of New Zealand's most well-known hiking trails, follows its eastern coast.

The lake is actually a fjord, which was cut off by sediments of the Tasman Sea. The sea is now two miles from the north end of the lake.

The Alpine Fault runs through the lake. Researchers from GNS Science and the University of Nevada, Reno investigated sediments of the last 24 earthquakes in the fault near the lake and found a very common activity.
