Lake Nero

The Lake Nero (Russian Озеро Неро ) is a nearly 52 km ² large freshwater lake in the European part of Russia in the Yaroslavl Oblast.

The lake was formed about 500,000 years ago from the meltwater of a glacier. The name of the water body is Finno-Ugric origin and originated in the times of the first settlements on its banks about 6000 years ago. The Lake Nero has two small islands ( Rozhdestvensky and Lwowski ) and, with its average depth of 1.3 meters at the shallowest waters of European Russia. This is due to the covering of the lake bottom with a thick sapropel layer. The shallow depth of the lake make it a popular destination for anglers: There are to be found there, among other stocks of pike, bream, perch and pike.

On the north- western shore, the ancient Russian city of Rostov is (often often called the Rostov-on- Lake Nero, to prevent any confusion with Rostov-on- Don ).
