Lake Piva

The Pivsko Lake is a reservoir in north-west of Montenegro and is the largest reservoir in the country.

The Piva is about 3 km north of the village Mratinje 1971-1976 established by the dammed 220 m high Mratinje Dam. The reservoir is on the 33- km long, covers an area of 12.5 square kilometers and is up to 188 m deep. The lake lies at an altitude of 675 m above sea level and is surrounded by forested mountains that rise up to a height of almost 2000 m.

The reservoir flooded the original location of the Piva monastery, in order to obtain it, was completely demolished and rebuilt at its current location again. The small town Plužine, which was in a large, deep valley, was also flooded and their inhabitants resettled in the newly built dam on the banks of Plužine.

The hydroelectric power plant below the dam produces a total output of 360 MW. The reservoir serves as a drinking water reservoir and is often used by boaters and anglers.

The European route E 762 runs along the lake and crosses it near Plužine.
