Lake Shala

The Shala ( Amharic ሻላ ሐይቅ, Shalla also called ) is a lake in Ethiopia. It is located about 200 km south of Addis Ababa, in Abijatta - Shalla National Park, as well as the only three kilometers to the north lake in Abijatta, and fills a 240,000 years old volcanic caldera.

After the satellite image of the lake is 26.5 km long and up to 16.2 km wide. It has an area of 329 km ² and is less than 266 meters deep. The average depth is 87 meters. This results in a volume of 36.7 km ³. The lake lies at an altitude of 1558 m.

The lake is known for its sulfur springs in the sole. Pink pelicans inhabit the islands of the lake, which is known under the name of a pelican island.
