Laleia

Laleia ( Leleia, Laleila, Lalaya, Lalea ) is the capital of the eponymous East Timor subdistrict in the district Manatuto.

The place

Laleia located in the north of Timor, about 70 km due east of the provincial capital of Dili and about 17 km east of the district capital Manatuto. The place is located in the northeast of the sub-district of the same name, north of the river Heuc and west of the Rio de Laleia, straddling the border between the Sucos Lifau and Haturalan. On the side of Lifau to the settlement center belonging places Lifau, Lenao and Uma Rentau are ( Uma Rentau ). On the side of Haturalan the greater part of the settlement lies with the places Uma Iuc ( Umaiuk ) Ralan ( Ranan ) and Weboro ( Beboro ). The center is located at an altitude of 156 m. Already in 1752 there was a Catholic church in Laleia. The current building was opened in 1933 and is run by Capuchins.

In the sub-district 3,089 people live (2010, 2004: 3,205 ). The largest language group consists of the speakers of the national language Galoli. The average age is 21.9 years ( 2010, 2004: 20.0 years ). It is the nation's highest of all Subdistrikte.

In Laleia Xanana Gusmão was born in 1946, the first President of East Timor since independence from Indonesia and current prime minister.

History

Laleia and Cairui were traditional kingdoms of Timor, which were ruled by a Liurai. They appear on a list of Afonso de Castro, a former governor of Portuguese Timor, who performed 47 kingdoms in 1868.

Laleia made ​​Portugal in 1868 during the rebellion in Cova military aid. 1882, there was fighting between Vemasse and Laleia what the Portuguese commander of the Militärkommendantur was blamed.
