Lambda Velorum

λ Velorum (lambda Velorum, short λ Vel ) is a giant of spectral type K5 Ib -II. It is an irregular variables, whose apparent visual magnitude between about 2.1 and 2.3 may be varied. He is the third brightest star in the constellation Vela. From his parallax of about 6 milliarcseconds results in a distance of about 170 parsecs. The star is also called Suhail ( from Arabic سهيل الوزن, DMG Suhail al - wazn ), but should not be confused with the also called star Suhail gamma Velorum.
