Lammar Wright, Sr.

Lammar Wright, Sr. ( born June 20, 1907 in Texarkana, Texas; † 13 April 1973 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter of the Oldtime Jazz and Swing.

Life and work

Lammar Wright grew up in Kansas City and sat in the late 1920s in the orchestra of Benny Moten. In 1927 he went to New York and was employed by the Missourians, and then until 1941 in Cab Calloway. In the 1940s he was principal trumpet with Don Redman, Claude Hopkins, Cootie Williams, Louis Armstrong, Lucky Millinder and Sy Oliver. Here he was a soloist in the title " Lamar 's Boogie ", 1946. Occasionally he also led his own formations, worked as a studio musician and as a teacher. In the 1950s he worked with Perez Prado in 1956, the Sauter - Finegan Orchestra in 1957 and 1959 in George Shearings Big Band.

Wright's two sons Lammar and Elmon were trumpeters; Lammar Jr. played with Lionel Hampton and Charlie Barnet, Elmon with Roy Eldridge, Earl Bostic and Buddy Rich, both 1947/48 in the big band of Dizzy Gillespie.
