Lamotrek

Lamotrek is an atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. Geographically, it is part of the archipelago of the Caroline Islands, politically it belongs to the State of Yap, the Federated States of Micronesia.

Geography

Lamotrek lies to the east of the State of Yap, 9 km east of the atoll Elato and 71 km south-west of Western Fayu. Of the Yap Islands in the west of the state it is located more than 1000 km. Lamotrek is an elongated atoll with a length of 15 km and a maximum width of 6.5 km. The total area of the atoll is 41 km ². Of this, 31.5 km ² to the lagoon; the land area only amounts to less than 1 km ². The atoll consists of three islands on the reef, Falaite in the West, Pugue the northeast and Lamotrek, the main island in the southeast of the atoll. The main island is by far the largest and the only inhabited of the three islands with 73.8 acres. Pugue measures 16.6 hectares, and Falaite 7.8 hectares. A small passage south of Pugue allowed entry into the up to 15 m deep lagoon. The islands are thickly covered with coconut palms and breadfruit trees.

Management

Lamotrek forms its own (municipality ) of the same name with 373 inhabitants (as of 2000). It belongs to the fifth and eastern election district of the State of Yap.
