Lanarce

Lanarce is a commune with 164 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) located in the department of Ardèche and in the Rhône-Alpes region. It belongs to the district Largentière and Canton Coucouron.

Geography

The mountain community located in the northwest of the department.

History

In Lanarce is the L' Auberge de Peyrebeille, also called Auberge Rouge. In the 19th century, the host couple is said to have 53 travelers robbed and murdered. The French writer Honoré de Balzac wrote in 1831 of the same story, which was founded in 1923 by Jean Epstein and 1951 film starring Fernandel in the role of a traveling monk under the title The red inn.
