Land Information New Zealand

Land Information New Zealand ( LINZ ) ( māori: Toitu te whenua ) is responsible for geographic information public service department in New Zealand.

The headquarters of the Department is located in Lambton House, 160 Lambton Quay, Wellington. The subordinate organizations are the New Zealand Geospatial Office, Overseas Investment Office and the New Zealand Geographic Board. In the Department various governmental tasks are grouped based on geographical information. The official mission of the Department is to build confidence in property rights in land and geographic information and to maintain and develop markets for geographic information.

It focuses on three core areas:

  • Transaction Management - LINZ operates the national system for land rights and their transfer, comparable to the German land registry
  • Information Management - procure, obtain, collate and make available geographic information, information on land ownership
