Noll is a member of Amdahl 6 group and found the largest Amdahl 6- prime: He is the co- inventor of a system for the designation of arbitrarily large numbers. He also helped start the International Obfuscated C Code Contest, and is the co- inventor of the Fowler Noll Vo hash function.

Noll is also a keen astronomer. He coined the term meteor squall ( " Meteorbö " ) to describe a significant meteor shower.
