Landon Ronald

Sir Landon Ronald ( born June 7, 1873 in London, † August 14, 1938 ibid; Complete name Landon Ronald Russell ) was an English conductor, music teacher and composer.

The son of the singer and composer Henry Russell studied from 1884 to 1890 at the Royal College of Music, among others, Charles Villiers Stanford and Hubert Parry. Already seventeen years old, he made ​​his conducting debut at the Lyric Theatre in London. He was accompanist at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and conductor of the touring ensemble of Augustus Harris. In 1894 he accompanied the singer Nellie Melba on a tour of the USA.

In 1896 he conducted Gounod's Faust at Covent Garden. Between 1898 and 1902 he conducted operettas in London's West End and gave summer concerts in Blackpool. 1900 Fred Gaisberg hired him as musical adviser to his The Gramophone Company, the His Master's Voice was called from 1909. The collaboration numerous recordings were performed by the singers Adelina Patti and Nellie Melba.

From 1904 headed Ronald the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom he played in 1909 the first performance of Edward Elgar's First Symphony in Rome; this later dedicated to him his Falstaff. Ronald composed more than 200 songs, including the Serenade espagnole, which was recorded by Enrico Caruso on board.

His elder brother Henry Ronald Russell (1871-1937) was opera impresario, the half-brother of William Clark Russell from the first marriage of his father was known as a novelist.
