Name

The name is probably from the Middle High German word brat, it means roast or meat and the Old High German Selde for house together. Bratselde therefore means about as much as place where travelers can dine; about a hostel. The addition Langen was added to distinguish between the village and Stadtprozelten.

History

Langenprozelten 1184 was the first mentioned as Bratselde documented. Since about 1800 the spelling Langenprozelten is in use. The village belonged since 1276 to the monastery Schönrain, which sold it after his economic decline in 1319 to the Counts of Rieneck. After the extinction of the Counts of Rieneck Prozelten fell in 1559 to Electoral Mainz. 1607 the village had about 500 inhabitants. At the end of the Thirty Years' War, only 40 people were alive. 50 years after the war Prozelten had about 600 inhabitants again. 1814 Langenprozelten went to Bavaria and the county Lohr. The community, close to the county border with Gemunden, felt neglected by the county Lohr and therefore constituted in 1952 the request for allotment to the district Gemünden. On 1 January 1978, until then independent municipality Langenprozelten was incorporated into Gemünden am Main.
