The castle Larissa (Greek κάστρο Λάρισα, also Argos Castle ) is a ruined castle west of the urban area of ​​Argos in the Peloponnese in Greece.

It is named after the hill on which it stands; whose name you want to Larissa, a figure from Greek mythology, go back. There are not too significant parts of the system that allow the development of the castle since the time of Frühhellenismus understand until the time of the Turkish occupation. The castle was built by the ancient (initially as Acropolis ) in constant use until the 19th century.

History

A first attachment existed in Mycenaean times. Ancient Hellenistic masonry from the 5th century BC is still good to see in the wall sockets. In the year 146, the Romans and the Visigoths conquered 395 under Alaric I the castle. In 600 it fell to the invading Slavs on the peninsula in the hands.

The Byzantines built a new fortress in the 12th century. In 1205 they conquered the Crusaders Godfrey of Villehardouin. He handed them over to the Duke of Athens, Otto de la Roche, for work armed assistance. From 1212, the castle was fundamentally renewed using older construction material. In 1394 it was sold to the Republic of Venice, 1463, the Ottomans were the owner of the castle. 1821 Dimitrios Ypsilanti conquered the fortress in the Greek War of Independence. You no longer played a role in military actions in the following period.
