Lars Hertervig

Lars Hertervig, ( born February 16, 1830 Borgøy; † January 6, 1902 in Stavanger ) was a Norwegian painter.

Hertervig is considered one of the most famous landscape painter of his country and as a master of the " Nordic Nature Romantic ". He was the son of poor people and one as " outsiders" decried Quaker and died in 1902 in misery.

This painter is one of the best known and most extraordinary artists in Norway. During his last 30 years of life he painted exclusively on papers of different origins: on wrapping papers, newspapers, tobacco papers and wallpaper. The great poverty in which he lived, had first led him to this choice of material. He has developed a highly original and beautiful works that formally far from the ideals of the late Romantic his time differ ( Kari Greve in Paper Conservation Vol 5 (2004) - No. 3. ).

1852-1853 took Hertervig in Dusseldorf private lessons with Hans Fredrik Gude landscape painter, 1853-1854 Erik Bodom. Both teachers were famous masters of the Düsseldorf School. There Hertervig fell in sustained mental confusion. The writer Jon Fosse took him as the main character in his four-part novel melancholy.

In 2002 he released a comprehensive, illustrated for providing Lars Hertervig. The book contains poems by Helge Torvund that are inspired by the paintings Hertervig and were set to music by Ragnar Bjerkreim 2007.
